« Socio-aesthetic patterns for de-growth? A formal approach to eco-politics »

Environmental scientists increasingly highlight the need for industrialized societies to implement a drastic transformation towards de-growth economic systems in order to counteract resource depletion and environmental degradation. A transformation towards de-growth would not only require fundamental institutional and policy changes, but it also demands a shift in cultural values and lifestyles.

This lecture starts from the idea that, to realize ‘de-growth’, it is crucial to link this term to innovative concepts of wellbeing and hedonism. Current research studies human history and environmental social movements (e.g. voluntary simplicity) to provide ideas for alternative forms of wellbeing. This presentation suggests that there is an additional pathway towards the innovation de-growth-oriented forms of hedonism. Drawing on Caroline Levine’s theory of forms, I argue that the social and aesthetic ‘organizing patterns’ for a de-growth society can also be found in current cultural practices that are not explicitly about de-growth. Via examples of ‘lifestyle minimalism’, I show how both anti-consumerist and post-work ideals are proliferating in contemporary popular culture. Further, I argue that the analysis of forms can provide insights into the socio-aesthetic patterns that currently prevent these ideals from becoming collectivized and politicized for a de-growth agenda.

Miriam Meissner is Assistant Professor in Urban Studies at the Department of Literature and Art, Maastricht University. Her research explores the interrelation between cities, creativity, political economy and the environment. In particular, it examines how urban art, media and cultural practices re-mediate and politicize global risks of finance and ecology. Miriam’s book publications include Narrating the Global Financial Crisis: Urban Imaginaries and the Politics of Myth (Palgrave, 2017) as well as the co-edited volumes The Routledge Companion to Urban Imaginaries (2018) and Global Garbage: Urban Imaginaries of Waste, Excess and Abandonment (Routledge, 2016).
